HISTORY: eyewash commonly refers to a fluid used in the aid of rinsing eyes. It also describes the apparatus used to physically wash the eyes, in the event of contamination by foreign materials or substances.
A lesser-known definition refers to the "spiffing-up" of base camps, in anticipation of visiting high-ranking officials. Essentially, "making the most" with not a whole lot. Causally, the end result leans toward minimalist as sheer necessity takes precedent. A lot of sweeping dirt out of the way; painting rocks white & simply white-washing nearly "everything" abounds - resulting in eyewash.
